These rare creatures are extremely territorial, and make their homes in rocky eyries. Their main diet consists of goat, bear, and an occasional mountain climber. Evil spirits are said to be scared off by the stone effigy of a gargoyle.

"My original sketch for this painting was titled "Grunge Dragon". The creature appeared more like what I would imagine a living "Gargoyle" would look like, and for a while that is what I called it. But it really reminds me more of the flying monkeys from the Wizard of Oz. The reference I used to create this creature was a mandril, warthog, lion, and bat. His claws are a cross between human hands and eagle claws. I really like the cliff in this painting. The "Flying Monkey" was painted using a combination of watercolors for the sky and fluid acryics for the rest of the painting. It was painted a on watercolor board."
